Welcome to Year 5

My name is Miss Geyser, and I am very pleased to welcome you to our Year 5 class. I am really looking forward to working with the children and supporting them as they grow in confidence, independence and enthusiasm for learning. We have an exciting year ahead, and I am looking forward to sharing our learning journey with you. Thank you for your continued support.

Being a Healthy School

  • We are a Healthy School and encourage children to make healthy choices

  • Children are advised to drink water throughout the school day and bring a named water bottle to school

  • At break time, children are encouraged to eat fruit and/or vegetables to support healthy growth and concentration

Physical Education (PE)

  • PE takes place every Thursday

  • Children should wear their PE kit to school on this day

  • Hair should be tied back and jewellery removed

Summer

Looking Ahead to Summer

This term, Year 5 will be learning about Diversity in Cardiff, with a particular focus on Cardiff Bay. We will explore why diversity is a strength and how different communities have helped shape Cardiff into the city it is today.

What We Will Be Learning

  • The history and importance of Cardiff Bay
  • Why Cardiff is a diverse and multicultural city
  • How different communities have contributed to Cardiff’s identity
  • Why diversity, inclusion and respect are important in our school and wider community
  • How we can celebrate our own identities while showing respect for others

Sustainability

We will also be learning about sustainability, with a focus on food and the environment.

  • Food waste and why reducing it matters
  • How our food is grown
  • Where our food comes from and how far it travels
  • Food miles and their impact on the environment
  • Choices we can make to help care for our planet

 

Spring

This year, Year 5 have been learning about Belonging, with a strong focus on Wales, identity, community and celebrating what makes us unique. Through discussion, enquiry, expressive arts and shared experiences, children have explored what it means to belong and how different cultures, traditions and communities help shape who we are.

What We Have Been Learning

  • Belonging in Wales and what makes our local and national identity special
  • Singing and performing as part of our Eisteddfod celebrations
  • Learning about Eid and taking part in our Eid assembly
  • Exploring our similarities and differences and learning more about each other
  • Celebrating the different cultures, families, languages and traditions within our class and wider community

Autumn

Evolving Technologies

This half term, Year 5 will be learning about Evolving Technologies, with a strong focus on the Industrial Revolution. Through history, discussion and enquiry, children will explore how technology has changed over time and the impact these changes have had on people’s lives.

What We Have Been Learning
  • The Industrial Revolution and how new technologies transformed work, transport and daily life

  • How technology has changed over time, comparing past and present

  • Children’s rights before and after the Industrial Revolution, including working conditions for children

  • Learning about significant historical figures such as Lord Shaftesbury and Dr Barnardo, and how they helped improve children’s lives

Educational Visit

  • We will be visiting The Big Pit on Tuesday 24th February to support our learning and bring this topic to life

  • Further details about the trip will be shared closer to the time

Homework

  • Spellings are given weekly and should be practised at home to support children’s writing skills

  • Children are encouraged to read at home regularly with a parent or carer

    • Please ask your child questions about their reading to support comprehension

  • Maths homework is set online using Sumdog
